William Bell attends National Swimming Championships 2018

Will's update following the National Swimming Championships 2018

You may have seen from our social media posts that William has recently been competing at the National Swimming Championships held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. William had an excellent week there and has provided us with a great day by day summary of his week.

Day 1 of the Championships and it was the 400 freestyle today. I had a decent heat swim, outside my best time, but fastest into the final in my age group. Happy to report the final went very well with improved stroke and turns. Finished in gold position, lowering the PB time I raced in Helsinki a few weeks ago. Very happy with that. I have the day off tomorrow and then the 100 and 1500 on Thursday.

Day 3. Another good day at the pool yesterday. The 100 freestyle in the morning was exciting and although just off my best time, I managed to qualify for the final in the afternoon. It was a good warm-up swim for my main event, the 1500 freestyle. My heat was the fastest heat and I raced against swimmers older than myself. The 1500 went well. I lowered my PB and got the gold in my age group, 29 seconds ahead of silver. Importantly I was 4th overall in the event which I was really pleased with. I did manage the 100 freestyle final straight after and finished 6th!

Day 4. Today I raced the 200 breaststroke and was very happy with my new personal best time in the heats. The final was very exciting and very close! Happy to report another PB (6 seconds in total today) and a silver medal. This time puts me second on British Rankings for my age group. It was also a new Senior Leicestershire County Record, replacing the time which had been a record since 2004!

Day5. Two of my favourite events today plus a team relay. First up was the 200 Individual Medley (IM) followed by the fastest heat in the 800 freestyle. My 200IM heat swim gave me a lane in the final, which followed very soon after the 800. I knocked a massive 4 seconds off my 800 time, which earnt me the gold in my age group (13 seconds ahead of silver) and placed me 4th overall in this event. I couldn't be happier with that result as only the 4th time I have raced this event. I also swam a personal best in the 200IM final and got the silver medal.

Day 6. Last day today at Ponds Forge and hoping to finish on a high! 200 free today, an event I have always enjoyed racing. My heat swim gave me a place in the final and my final swim earnt me another silver medal and a massive 2 second personal best time. And that's the end of this season. Looking forward to 4 weeks off and lots of rest. Very happy with my British Rankings at the end of the long course season: No2 200 free, 200 breast, 200IM and 400IM. No 1 400, 800 and 1500 free.

As you can see, William had a fantastic week of competing, and as always we are so proud of him. The hard work and dedication that he applies to his swimming is one of the reasons we first decided to sponsor him all of those years ago.

Keep up the good work William.
